Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Alhaji Lamido Sanusi, yesterday warned that the ongoing revolution in some North African countries may occur in Nigeria if the country fails to utilise its abundant natural resources properly.
‘’If we do not put our vast resources to use, if we don’t take advantage of these potential, what is happening in North African countries will happen here,” he declared.
Sanusi sounded the alarm at Nsukka shortly after receiving the degree of Doctor of Business Administration of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka during its 40th convocation ceremony.
He regretted that Nigeria has continued to swim in the ocean of underdevelopment despite its huge natural resources.
He lamented that despite the existence of huge oil and gas, cassava and cotton, among others, Nigeria continues to import power and starch.
Sanusi advised Nigerians to initiate development of the country, noting that foreigners are not in the best position to address the nation’s developmental needs.
The Central Bank boss said there was need to use the nation’s abundant huge natural resources to make Nigeria the China of Africa and avoid the revolution that took place in Egypt, Tunisia, among others.
He thanked the institution for considering him worthy of the award and promised to do everything within his reach to reciprocate the gesture.
President Goodluck Jonathan, who is also the visitor to the institution, reiterated the commitment of his administration to credible elections in the country.
He stated that he wants to be remembered for “giving Nigerians credible election.”
Jonathan, who was represented by Minister of Education, Professor Ruquyyatu Rufai advised students not to allow themselves to be used as thugs during the forthcoming polls.
He said: “As we continue to make great sacrifice for youth development, our hope is that the youths will be key drivers in the development of this nation. I hope to rise as the occasion demands in the quest to attain our full potentials as a great nation.”
Present at the event, were Sanusi’s predecessor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo, Minister of Petroleum, Mrs  Deziana  Allison-Madueke , among others.
